Generic Name: Ciprofloxacin
Classification: Antibiotic (Fluoroquinolones)
Used to treat:
Bacterial Infections of the urinary tract, respiratory tract skin, bones and joints
Gonorrhea and Infectious Diarrhea

General Directions for Taking Medication:
Take only as directed. Schedule the doses around the clock and finish prescription.
Finish all of the prescription even if you start to feel better. Stopping the medicine early may lead to stronger, more resistant forms of bacteria.
If you miss a dose, take the medicine as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, take only 1 dose. DO NOT double up the doses.
Female patients taking birth control pills should either abstain from sexual activity or use an additional form of contraception like condoms with spermicide. This medication reduces the effectiveness of the birth control pills. Talk to your doctor about your options.
Take this medicine 1-hour before meals or 2-hours after meals. This medicine is absorbed better on an empty stomach. If this medicine upsets your stomach, however, take with food.
Drink plenty of fluids when taking this medication unless otherwise directed by your doctor.
Rinse regularly with mouthwash, brush your teeth, and use sugarless gum or hard candy to limit dry mouth.
Shake oral suspension well before taking the dose.
Avoid taking antacids with magnesium, calcium, or aluminum; iron or zinc supplements; or Carafate (anti-ulcer drug) 4 hours before or 2 hours after taking this medicine
Use sunglasses, sunscreen of SPF 15 or greater, wear protective clothing, and avoid excessive sunlight exposure. This medicine increases the risk of photosensitivity reactions.
Follow up with your doctor to monitor the effectiveness of this medication.
Contraindications:
Allergies - Hypersensitivity to this medication or its components
Children less than 18 years of age
Use with caution in:
Patients with central nervous system disorders or kidney disorders
Pregnancy and Breast Feeding - May not be safe for your baby. Talk to your doctor about benefits and risks
Elderly patients or patients undergoing dialysis treatments - May have an increased risk of rupturing tendons.
Common Side Effects:
May occur during the first few days after beginning therapy, but usually resolve:
Upset stomach, decreased appetite, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, dry mouth, bitter taste, headache, dizziness, or restlessness
Serious Side Effects:
Notify your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following:
Muscle tremors, confusion, insomnia, nervousness, drowsiness, seizures, hallucinations, photophobia, blood in urine, vaginal discharge and itching
Tendon pain and inflammation - May indicate a rupture or tear of tendon.
Allergic reaction symptoms such as a red skin rash; itching; swelling of the face, lips, tongue, and throat; wheezing; chest pain; and difficulty breathing
Interactions:
Drug - There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription, which will alter the action of this medication. Some include asthma medications, antacids, zinc and iron supplements, blood thinners, cancer medications, anti-ulcer drugs, heart medicines, anti-gout medicines, and certain steroid medicines.
It is extremely important that you consult with your doctor about dosing schedules if you take a variety of medications along with this medication. DO NOT take any new medication without talking with your doctor first.
Food - May slow and reduce the absorption of this medication. Milk and yogurt will decrease the absorption of this medication significantly.
Warnings:
Overdose - Can lead to severe nausea, vomiting, stomach discomfort, diarrhea or seizures
Avoid caffeine-containing products like soft drinks, tea and coffee. May increase the effects of caffeine.
DO NOT save or share this medicine with other people. This medicine has an expiration date and others may require different treatments for their conditions.
